I still can’t wrap my head around the tragedy that struck Diego Carreto’s family and our community. What haunts me is how violence has seeped into what should be the safest spaces for our kids. Diego was right near his home—a place where he should have been safe. How do families move past knowing their child was taken from them in the very place they should feel most secure? My heart is with Melissa Siegel and Diego’s friends who must now navigate a world without him. The way his mother’s friend stepped up to organize a fundraiser speaks volumes about the support network they have, but it also highlights how much they’ll need us in the days and months to come. It’s comforting to see the community rally around them, but nothing can fill the space Diego left behind. Also, on a broader scale, what can be done to prevent this from happening again? I hope the legal proceedings not only bring justice for Diego but also shed light on measures that can be taken to protect other young lives in our area. ?
