I’ve been thinking about the courage it must have taken for Jerry Reed Everett and his fellow officers to respond to that call on April 17, 1964. It's hard to imagine the fearlessness involved in walking into uncertain situations, only to face such an ambush. The details about them being handcuffed together make it even more chilling. It seems like the suspects had some level of planning given how quickly everything devolved. This case really reminds us of the constant risks officers take every day; they are true heroes for stepping into the line of duty knowing the perils. My thoughts go out to the families who likely still feel this loss profoundly. Does anyone here have any additional local insight into how the community supported these families in the aftermath? It would be great to hear more about the ways in which communities come together in times of such tragedy.
