I’ve been thinking a lot about the role of community vigilance in cases like Lenoxki Smith II’s tragic death. It’s so painful to know that his life was cut short, and I truly feel for his family and friends who must be enduring such an unimaginable loss. While reading more about Savannah’s initiatives to reduce gun violence, I wonder if there’s a way to engage more residents in active neighborhood watches or community programs. A program that brings together locals to look out for one another could be valuable—whether through organizing regular meetings or just forming networks to keep an eye on each other’s well-being. It’s unfortunate that Lenoxki became another statistic of gun violence before his time. I sincerely hope that this case spurs the kind of grassroots action that can make places like Oak Forest Apartments and wider communities safer for everyone. Whether it’s better street lighting or increased neighborhood patrols, we need something that shows these senseless acts have no place in our communities.
