I’ve been following the case of John Lark Conley over these past months, and one detail that continually stands out is the timing of the welfare check that led to the discovery of the house fire. It's chilling to think about how moments matter in these situations. I can't imagine how the family member who made the call must be feeling—first the worry about not hearing from John, and then the devastation of learning what happened.
What really puzzles me though is understanding why Schmit would have targetted Mr. Conley in the first place. They seem to be from relatively close age groups and the same local area, but I've read nothing about any connection between them. It really makes you wonder about the undercurrent of circumstances that might have existed for something so dire to happen.
The whole community seems to have been profoundly affected by this loss. For anyone who knew Mr. Conley, this has got to be a particularly difficult time. Does anyone have any further insights or local knowledge about either men, their history, or what might have led to this tragic incident? It might help make sense of such an unthinkable act.
