I've been thinking about the horrific case of Susan Place and Georgia Jessup, and it's just so chilling how they fell prey to someone like Gerard John Schaefer. Imagine being Susan's parents, trusting their daughter was just going to play guitar at the beach, never to return home safely. The idea that "Gerry Shepherd" was a wolf in sheep's clothing is terrifying.
What really gets to me is how Schaefer was already on the radar, having been arrested in July for a similar crime. It's so unsettling to know that he was out on bail, free to harm those two innocent girls. It seems like such a glaring oversight, and it makes me wonder if things might have been different if the system had acted more decisively back then.
Finding the purse belonging to Susan in Schaefer's residence is such damning evidence, but it’s just a terrible reminder of how close these horrors hit to home. It's deeply upsetting to think about how many lives he was able to destroy before being stopped. My heart truly goes out to the families of all his victims. They deserved better, and I'm glad that at least some justice was served, but it never seems like enough, does it?
I can't stop thinking about the bravery of those two girls Schaefer abducted in July 1972. Imagine the terror they must have felt being driven to a secluded area and tied up like that. It's incredible that they managed to escape and get him arrested. It really speaks to their courage and resilience. It's just so frustrating that he was released on bail—seems like such a grave oversight in hindsight. If only more had been done to keep him behind bars then, maybe Susan and Georgia could still be with us. My heart goes out to all the families affected by his crimes. Justice may have been served, but nothing can fill the void left by those precious lives lost.
