Thomas Lane was 17 and a student at Lorenzo Walker Technical High School when he died on August 15, 2016. He was in a parking garage at Coastland Center Mall with three friends and was showing them a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun when the firearm discharged, striking him in the jaw. He was taken to NCH Baker Hospital Downtown but succumbed to his injuries.
The Naples Police Department investigated. Lt. Seth Finman said the gun appeared to have been in Thomas’s lap and may have discharged during a struggle. Investigators considered negligence but ultimately concluded the shooting was accidental; no charges were filed against the friends who were present. The death prompted grief counseling at the school and community discussion about gun safety.
Are there details from that day or the parking garage anyone can share that might clarify what happened?
