I've been thinking a lot about Gerald Leon Jr. Smith and what his loss says about this city. It's devastating to see how a young life was cut short by the pervasive violence that grips Baltimore. He was only 17, just on the brink of adulthood, with so many dreams likely ahead of him. It breaks my heart not just for Gerald, but for his family and friends who have to live on without him. I can't help but wonder about the systemic issues that put so many of Baltimore's youth in harm's way. The lack of resources and opportunities in certain neighborhoods contributes to these senseless acts. It's not just about solving individual cases like Gerald's, but tackling the root causes that lead to such tragedies. For those who knew Gerald or others like him, how do we begin to heal and create change that prevents another young life from being lost? I've seen some communities coming together to demand better support and policies, which gives me a glimmer of hope. Yet, it's painful to think about how many lives might have been saved if action had been taken sooner. Sending love and strength to all affected by this ongoing crisis.

I just can't stop thinking about Gerald Leon Jr. Smith and how senseless his death was. A 17-year-old with an entire life ahead of him, just taken away like that. It’s been years now, and yet his case still hangs over the community like an open wound. It’s frustrating knowing that someone out there has information that could bring his killer to justice, yet the case remains unsolved. What really bothers me is how many young people we’ve lost in Baltimore because of gun violence, and how it seems like things haven't changed much since 2015. We’re talking about real lives being cut short, dreams being erased. It's daunting to think about all the families left with questions and no closure. Smith's story is one of many, but that doesn't make it any less important. We need to keep pushing for answers, for his family and for Baltimore’s future. He deserved so much better.
