James Matthew Begley, 64, was last seen in Fort Bragg, California, on August 6, 2017. He went out kayaking in the Pacific Ocean between midnight and 2:00 a.m. after telling someone he couldn’t sleep and wanted to go on the water. He was reportedly not wearing a wetsuit or life vest, only a tan Carhartt jacket.

At 2:50 p.m. that day the U.S. Coast Guard recovered his kayak adrift and empty. Authorities suspect he was lost at sea, but his body was never recovered. Witnesses who knew him in the days before his disappearance reported he gave conflicting statements about his plans and some speculated he may have been struggling with an undiagnosed mental illness. An extensive search of land and surrounding waters turned up nothing, and he is presumed deceased.

If anyone saw James on the night of August 6, 2017, or has information about his movements in Fort Bragg that morning, please share what is known.
