Does anyone else find it utterly frustrating that Calvin Levar Ellis, like so many others, got caught in the crossfire of systemic failures? It feels like a never-ending cycle — the lack of opportunities, poverty, and the easy access to guns just create a perfect storm. Reading about Calvin's death shed light on just how hard it was for families living in such communities back in 2015. It’s so disheartening to think about the number of families left shattered and the dreams unfulfilled because of these issues. What strikes me is how his story seems to parallel so many others from that year, almost like the city was in a constant state of mourning. It seems there was a cry for help from the community that might have gone unheard at the time. The Ceasefire Campaign and similar initiatives are steps in the right direction, but were they enough back then? I’d love to hear others’ thoughts on what more could’ve been done, or needs to be done still. My heart goes out to Calvin’s family and all those who have suffered from similar tragedies. We need to keep these conversations going if we hope to build safer communities for everyone.
