Hey everyone, I’ve been diving deep into the Yuba County Five case, and something’s been bugging me about Gary Mathias. I read that his shoes were found in the trailer with Ted Weiher, yet he was nowhere to be seen. It got me thinking: if he left the trailer on foot, where did he go, and why did he leave without his shoes in that brutal weather? It’s like he planned on returning but never did. Could it be possible that someone else was present in the trailer and Gary had a reason to leave in a hurry, or maybe he just ventured out to get more help but got lost in the process? The presence of his shoes almost makes it seem like an irrational action, but I’m really curious to hear what others might think—especially those familiar with the area or who have experience with similar survival situations. Thoughts?

Has anyone else considered the possibility that Gary Mathias might have been trying to find help for his friends when he disappeared? Given that they were so far off their intended route, and considering his history of wandering off due to his schizophrenia, maybe he left the trailer in a disoriented state, driven by a sense of urgency to get aid. It puzzles me, though, why his shoes were left behind in the trailer—were they too wet or damaged to wear, or did he have some kind of episode that made him leave suddenly? Could he have thought he was closer to civilization than he actually was, and ventured out without realizing the dangers? This whole case is a tangled mystery, and it’s so frustrating not having more answers after all these years. I'd love to hear what others think about this angle!

I've been delving into the mysteries surrounding Gary Mathias and his unfortunate disappearance. One aspect that really gets me is the discovery of Ted Weiher in that Forest Service trailer. It's so eerie to think that Ted managed to survive for weeks amidst such harsh conditions. Yet, there's no sign of Gary except for his shoes. What could have made him leave shelter? Given Gary's dependency on medication, it's possible his mental state was seriously impacted, which might explain unexpected decisions. But it leaves me questioning: Why leave the shelter at all? Did he think he could find his way back to civilization, or was something else at play? Would love to hear everyone else's thoughts. What do you all think might've happened after they reached that trailer?
