I was reading about Pedersen and Middleton's disappearance, and it got me thinking about how remote and unforgiving the Alaskan wilderness can be. It's such a vast area that swallowing up a plane without a trace isn't as far-fetched as it sounds. The fact that they had no specific flight plan makes me wonder, did they have any backup communication devices or emergency supplies onboard? It might not change anything now, but it's frustrating to think that in such a desolate yet beautiful part of the world, things can just vanish. I also wonder if the weather played a role. Does anyone know if there were any reports of severe weather in that area around late September of '84? Anchorage weather can be unpredictable, and I imagine it would be even more so when you're heading out towards the wild for something like moose spotting.
Has anyone ever heard about the search efforts around the Kenai Peninsula for the missing plane that Pedersen and Middleton were in? I was reading about how they took off without a specific flight plan. It makes me wonder if this affected the search operations back in '84. With Alaska being so vast and remote, would not documenting their intended path make it nearly impossible to narrow down the search area? If someone has more info about how search protocols worked back then or any insights into similar cases, I'm really curious. It's always stuck with me how quickly people can just vanish like that without leaving a single trace.
Hey everyone,
Has anyone ever looked into the weather conditions on the day Pedersen and Middleton went missing? I was reading up on some old records, and it seems like early fall can get pretty unpredictable up in Alaska. With no established flight plan and the vastness of that region, it makes me wonder if a sudden storm could have caught them off guard. Especially considering they were flying a Piper A-12, which isn’t really a big plane. I can’t stop thinking about how quickly things might have gone wrong if bad weather hit. Would love to hear if anyone has more info or theories on this aspect!
Thanks,
