I stumbled across a detail in the Herbert Mullin case that I found truly chilling and wanted to share it here. It's about when Mullin first encountered Kathy Francis. From what I understand, she had no idea who he was or the danger he posed when she gave him Jim Gianera's new address. It's haunting to think how a simple act of trying to help someone could lead to such a horrific outcome for Kathy and her boys, David and Daemon. My heart goes out to their surviving family members who had to deal with such an unimaginable loss. The randomness of the encounter really stood out to me. Kathy was just going about her day, and suddenly her life was irreversibly changed by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The whole "Murder Capital" reputation Santa Cruz got because of people like Mullin must have left so many families on edge during that time. It's hard to fathom living with that constant fear. I hope we can continue to remember the victims and keep their stories alive instead of just focusing on the killers. They deserve to be more than just names associated with a grim chapter of history. Does anyone else find this aspect of the case particularly unsettling?
