Has anyone else been reading up on the Ship Ashore motel tragedy from '75? My heart aches for the Knott family and for all the victims. I came across an interesting detail about Gordon and Shirley Gail Knott's time as managers at the motel. They were known in Smith River for their hospitality and kindness. Locals often spoke highly of them, noting how they always went out of their way to make guests feel welcome and part of the community. It makes this senseless act even more difficult to swallow, knowing that such warm and wonderful people were taken in such a brutal way. I'm wondering what other stories from that time suggest about the close-knit nature of the community and how they might have come together in the aftermath. If anyone has more insight or personal stories about the Knotts or the area during that time, I'd be grateful if you could share. We need to remember the good in these tragic stories.
Hey everyone,
I wanted to share some thoughts on the unsung heroes during that tragic night at the Ship Ashore motel – the first responders and law enforcement officers. I've been reading through some articles about the shooting and honestly, it must have been incredibly challenging for them to navigate such utter chaos and devastation. It's easy to overlook their courage and dedication when trying to process the larger picture.
It's heart-wrenching to think about the brave individuals who rushed towards danger while others were desperate to find safety. Responding to a scene where colleagues, friends, and community members had been so devastatingly affected must have been unimaginably difficult.
I hope the community has rallied around them just as much as the victims' families, as those officers surely needed support and strength through that ordeal too. Thoughts go out to everyone affected by the tragedy, as well as gratitude for those who worked tirelessly to restore some sense of order and bring Sander into custody.
Stay safe, everyone. Hug your loved ones.
