Every time I think about Laura Sue Benjamin and the other victims, I can't help but feel a deep sense of sorrow for their families. What strikes me about Laura's case is the vulnerability that hitchhiking presented to so many young women during that time. It's terrifying to think how someone like Thor Nis Christiansen took advantage of that. Seeing how the investigation unfolded, particularly how Linda Preston's bravery played a key role in identifying him, gives me a lot of respect for her courage. Some silver lining in this tragic story is the change it spurred. The case brought much-needed attention to the dangers of hitchhiking and led to increased awareness and safety measures for young people traveling alone. It's just so distressing that it often takes such horrific events for society to enact change. Laura and the other victims’ stories remain crucial reminders of why safety measures are vital. Thinking of all the families impacted and hoping they’ve found some measure of peace.
