Has anyone else been following the Jerry Ramirez case in Boyle Heights? It’s so devastating thinking about how an 18-year-old's life was cut short. I’ve been reading some discussions around it and something that really strikes me is the silence in the community due to fear of retaliation. It’s completely understandable, but it makes me wonder, how do we break these cycles of fear? How can community members come together and feel safe to speak out for justice? Peaceful neighborhoods and safe spaces shouldn’t be impossible dreams for our youth. I’m hoping that we can brainstorm some ideas on here that can help communities like Jerry’s feel more secure in coming forward with information without fear. Would love to hear what you all think or if there’s any similar cases you’ve seen that found solutions to this problem.
