I’ve been thinking a lot about the community's role in unsolved cases like William Velasquez's. It's incredibly sad how fear or distrust can silence vital voices that might hold the key to justice. I understand how intimidating it can be to come forward, especially if you live in a neighborhood where crime is prevalent or there's a real fear of retaliation. But it breaks my heart to think of his family being left with so many unanswered questions.
What makes me so curious is how community engagement could shift in such cases. Are there programs or initiatives that have successfully encouraged people to share what they know? Maybe by providing anonymous tip lines or promoting community policing more effectively? It feels like we need more outreach and maybe even education to help bridge the gap between the community and law enforcement.
I hope that someday someone courageously steps up so William’s family can find some peace. Maybe there’s a way we could work towards creating safer avenues for people to come forward, so at least future cases might stand a better chance of being solved.
