Since Max's case is so deeply tragic and complex, I wanted to discuss something I've been wondering about: the plea deal that Kroll received. Has anyone else thought about why he was charged with voluntary manslaughter instead of murder? I get that plea deals happen frequently, especially when they want to ensure a conviction, but it feels like such a light charge considering Max was just walking along a trail, living his life. I'm trying to wrap my head around the legal strategy here. Was it lack of evidence or maybe something to do with his intent? It just feels like this deal left an unresolved aspect of justice for Max's family. I can't imagine how they've dealt with it, knowing that Kroll's sentence could have been so much harsher. My heart goes out to them for their loss and the gut-wrenching legal process they had to endure. Any legal buffs or others who followed the case closely have insights on this?
