Was anyone else struck by how Andrew Bender was actively making an effort to change his life, only to have his past catch up to him? It’s deeply frustrating to see someone trying to steer away from a difficult environment, to work as a security guard and have dreams for the future, but still get pulled back by circumstances beyond his control. It’s a stark reminder of how intertwined gang violence can be with family and community histories. His mom's account of his attempts to leave that life behind hits hard, and I can't imagine the heartache of planning for a child’s future that was so unfairly taken away. My thoughts are with his family—they deserve justice and peace through all this. How do we even begin to tackle the cycle that traps so many young men like Andrew?
