It's been over seven years since Felipe was taken from us, and it feels like the pain in the community hasn't lessened one bit. Every time people drive past Acosta Plaza, there's a somber reminder of what happened that April morning. It's particularly disturbing how this happened in broad daylight with people around, yet there's been so little information. I sometimes wonder about those who were there and what they might have seen. The silence is deafening, and it really fuels the cycle of fear and violence that's been gripping Salinas.
It's hard not to think about his family and how they must be still looking for answers and some form of justice or closure. I can't help but think of local leaders and how hard it must be for them, too, trying to mend a community that constantly faces such heart-wrenching violence. Violence victim advocate Debbie Aguilar made a good point about the danger of staying silent—how it just allows these tragedies to continue without check.
I hope people who know even the smallest detail will have the courage to speak up, for Felipe's sake and to help build a safer environment for the youth in our city. We can't keep losing our young ones like this. It's a call for everyone in the community to step up and support each other in whatever ways we can.
