Has anyone else been following the aftermath of Mary and Brad Wheat's case? I’ve been thinking about the role of mental health evaluations in law enforcement settings, especially after learning that Brad had been deemed safe by his evaluators. How often do these assessments take place, and what standards are officers held to in these situations? It’s so crucial to ensure that the systems in place are rigorous enough to truly identify those at risk — for their well-being and that of others. It’s a terrifying thought that such red flags were missed or overlooked. The whole situation just makes me feel so incredibly sad for Mary and the store owner — and angry about what happened. The community has really been shaken by all of this. I hope something good can come from such a tragic event in terms of policy changes.
