Has anyone else looked into the background of Border Patrol policies regarding use of force when dealing with individuals with mental health issues? This case involving David Angel Villalobos Valdovinos is incredibly troubling. It's distressing to think about his last moments, being unarmed and likely terrified. Given that David reportedly had developmental challenges, it's frustrating that de-escalation techniques weren't prioritized. Has there been any precedent in similar cases that led to changes in protocol for agents? My heart goes out to his family, especially his wife and son. Losing a loved one under such circumstances must be unimaginably difficult. It's crucial for more people to become aware and informed so that tragedies like this might be prevented in the future.
Hi everyone,
I can't stop thinking about the training and protocols that came into play, or seemingly didn't, during the tragic incident involving David Angel Villalobos Valdovinos. It’s so crucial for law enforcement to have specialized training, especially when it comes to interacting with individuals who have mental or developmental handicaps. It's a situation that's far too common and begs the question: how are officers like Ryan Gonsalves trained to de-escalate tense situations when they involve vulnerable individuals?
The lawsuit claims that non-lethal methods were not used, and I'm really curious about what kind of non-lethal options are made available to border patrol agents. Is there continuous training on recognizing and appropriately engaging with individuals who may not comprehend or respond to commands in a conventional way? The thought that the interaction could have taken a different course with some additional considerations is really troubling.
I hope the ongoing legal proceedings shed some light on these protocols and that perhaps it leads to better practices in the future, so no other family has to face such a devastating loss. Sending my deepest sympathies to the Villalobos family and all who knew him.
