I’ve been following the case of Demaree Hampton and Lamar Williams, and I can't stop thinking about the impact this has had on the students and athletes they mentored. These were more than just coaches; they were role models and sources of support for so many young people at Mission High School. Losing them so suddenly and violently is undoubtedly devastating for all those who looked up to them. It’s heartbreaking that students not only have to process this loss but also face the harsh reality of gun violence that hits so close to home. I hope the investigation finds those responsible, but I also hope this brings more urgent attention to the need for community resources and support in neighborhoods like Bayview-Hunters Point. As a community, we need to ensure our young people have safe environments to grow and thrive, surrounded by mentors who inspire and guide them. My thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy.
