It's so devastating to hear about Van Surrell Jr.'s tragic death outside the Motel 6. My heart goes out to his family, especially as they were already dealing with so much upheaval after the fire. It’s absolutely haunting to imagine his mother, Antrice, finding out about her son's death in such a horrific way—just unreal. It’s chilling that she heard the gunshot and had no idea it was him. I can’t even begin to fathom the pain they are going through right now. What really stands out to me is Van’s struggle with paranoid schizophrenia. This is such an important issue that doesn’t get enough attention, especially when it comes to interactions with the public and law enforcement. It makes you wonder if there was a way mental health resources could have played a role here, potentially preventing this terrible outcome. It’s so frustrating that there’s not more support for those dealing with mental health issues, which often leaves them vulnerable in situations like these. Has anyone heard if there are any local mental health organization's efforts being made to raise awareness on this? It would be amazing to see the community honor Van's memory by addressing the mental health aspect of this case and possibly preventing similar tragedies in the future. I hope the Stockton Police are able to find the justice Van and his father deserve, but also that this case serves as a wake-up call for better support systems. Thoughts and love to Antrice, Ellesse, and the rest of their family during this terrible time.
