I’ve been following the case of Johnson and Leclerc and something that caught my attention was their choice not to carry a satellite phone or emergency beacon. With their level of expertise, I find it puzzling. Was this a conscious decision due to their confidence in their skills, or maybe just an oversight? It’s not uncommon for elite climbers to rely heavily on their instincts and experience rather than tech aids, but given the unpredictable weather conditions in Alaska, it seems like such a risky choice in hindsight. Does anyone know if they typically climbed without such devices, or was this out of character for them?
Hey everyone, I’ve been following the discussion about Marc-Andre Leclerc and George Johnson and noticed something curious. I’ve been reading up on crevasse falls and wanted to share a bit about how tricky they are. Crevasses can be incredibly difficult to navigate, and they really show how unpredictable climbing can be, even for experienced climbers like Marc and George. It's so unfortunate that they didn’t have a satellite phone or emergency beacon with them. I wonder if having either of those could have changed the outcome, especially with the snowstorm approaching. Climbing always has risks, but it really makes you think about how vital those emergency tools are. What do you guys think—could more resources or tech help prevent or mitigate these situations? Would love to hear your thoughts on this.
