I recently came across an old newspaper clipping about the tragic events of July 28, 1931, and it got me thinking about poor little Michael Vengalli and his family. Can you imagine the sheer terror they must have felt that evening? The news must have been a devastating blow. My heart goes out to them. I can't help but think about how completely innocent Michael was, just playing outside and enjoying his day. It’s chilling how he ended up as collateral damage in a world that shouldn’t have even touched him.
The thought that Vincent Coll and his crew could just open fire in such a populated area is terrifying. It makes you wonder about the level of chaos that existed in those gang-driven sections of NYC at the time. People constantly living in fear because of these reckless acts. It's a relief that law enforcement decided to start taking more action against organized crime after this tragedy, but it never seems enough when a young life has already been lost. Does anyone know if Michael's family ever received the justice they deserved, even indirectly through Coll’s eventual demise? It's such a tragic story, and it's hard to not feel the frustration they must have felt back then.
