I've been thinking a lot about the ramifications of the internal investigations that followed Sergeant McCormick's tragic death. It's so tough to imagine how his family must have felt—losing someone in such a sudden and avoidable way. From what I've read, it seems like the outcome of those investigations pushed the NYPD to reevaluate their training programs. I just keep wondering whether enough changes were made afterward to ensure better safety for officers during drug raids.
It's one thing for McCormick's family to contend with the wrongful death lawsuit being dismissed, but I hope they found some solace in knowing that his death wasn't entirely in vain. If the department learned and evolved because of this heartbreaking event, maybe it saved other officers from similar fates. My heart goes out to McCormick's loved ones and his fellow officers who had to process the trauma of losing a partner in such tumultuous circumstances.
