I've been thinking a lot about the role that surveillance footage played in helping to solve Juan Martinez’s case. It’s such a conflicting topic because, on one hand, it feels like an invasion of privacy to have cameras everywhere. On the other hand, it's hard to deny the crucial part it played in getting justice for Juan and his family. The footage seemed to fill in so many gaps in the investigation when witness accounts alone might not have been enough. I can't imagine the relief Juan's family must have felt when they realized there was solid evidence that could help hold those responsible accountable. It's tragic that it takes something so terrible to appreciate the value of these technologies. This case really makes you think about the balance between safety and privacy. How do we make sure we protect individual freedoms while still catching the people who do such terrible things? My thoughts are with Juan’s loved ones—no one should have to endure such a loss.
