On the morning of June 30, 2015, 16-year-old Jonathan Cardona-Hernandez of Central Islip, New York, was murdered on Nicoll Avenue. Members of MS-13 suspected Jonathan of ties to a rival group known as L-Block. Co-conspirators then fired a second handgun, striking him at least 10 times. The perpetrators fled and reported the killing to MS-13 leaders locally and in El Salvador.

The investigation led to the arrest of William Castellanos, also known as Dizzy and Satanico, by the FBI’s Long Island Gang Task Force in May 2016. Castellanos rose to a leadership position in his clique and was among several MS-13 members indicted in a string of violent crimes tied to the same investigation. Other named defendants in the indictment included Edwin Amaya-Sanchez and Jhonny Contreras.
