I’ve been following the case of Rodriguez Sawyers, and I can’t stop thinking about the area where he was found. The 900 block of N. Monroe Street has seen its fair share of violence, but each time something like this happens, it echoes how there are real lives behind those statistics. I grew up not too far from there, and though I wasn’t fortunate enough to know Rodriguez personally, I feel for his family and friends. It’s unsettling to think about how many lives are impacted not just by this one senseless act but by the cycle of violence affecting so many in Baltimore. It raises the question about what more can be done around N. Monroe and similar areas. It’s a place where change is desperately needed. Many of us want to be part of the solution, and talking about these issues keeps it on the forefront of everyone’s minds. Here’s hoping the justice system sees this case through to the end and that we can somehow work towards a future where violence isn’t an everyday reality for so many families. For Rodriguez and others in his situation, we must strive for better.
