I recently attended the vigil for Kenyon "Yonnie" Alec Smith and it was one of the most moving experiences I've had in a long while. Seeing the entire community come together to honor a young man who was so clearly loved was both touching and sobering. It was a clear testament to the kind of person Yonnie was. The way everyone spoke about him, particularly how he’d always offer a helping hand to local businesses by just sweeping their sidewalks, truly paints a picture of his character. It's devastating to think that someone with such a positive impact was lost to such senseless violence. What really got me was the release of blue and white balloons into the sky. It was a beautiful symbol, yet a stark reminder of everything that was taken away too soon. I could feel the weight of everyone's pain and also the hope that Yonnie's passing can stir change. The fact that no arrests have been made is frustrating, and I can only imagine how much more it weighs on his family. I hope this post encourages someone to speak up if they know something because Yonnie and his family deserve justice. Has anyone here been involved in community efforts or discussions on how we could address the violence in Baltimore more effectively? It feels like more than just law enforcement needs to respond—it feels like a societal issue that we should all be a part of healing.
