Does anyone know more about the election violence in Laurens County in 1870? I've been reading about the tragic murder of Wade Perrin, and it seems like the whole election period was filled with horrific acts targeting African American leaders. It’s so disturbing to think about the level of intimidation and brutality these individuals faced just for participating in the democratic process. The fact that riots and assaults were common during this time is just appalling. I'm curious if there's additional info on how this impacted the wider community and if any measures were put in place afterward to offer some protection to African American politicians and voters. It must have taken so much courage for people like Perrin to stand up against such hatred and violence. Those standing up for justice back then were incredibly brave, and it's horrible that they had to pay such a high price. If anyone has more details or sources about this, I’d love to learn more. Thanks.
