I recently came across the tragic case of Captain James Edward Myers, and it deeply affected me. Captain Myers was not only a respected figure in the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety, but he was also a cornerstone of his family and community. It’s just so tragic to think about how a simple day at his own farm turned into such a horrific event. The calculated nature of the suspect, waiting in his shed with stolen weapons, is chilling. What struck me most about this case is the randomness of the encounter—it makes you realize how someone so dedicated and beloved can be taken away in such an inconceivable manner. The stories about his love for the outdoors and his family truly illustrate how full of life he was. I can’t imagine the pain his loved ones endured; it’s really important that we continue to remember and honor those who dedicated their lives to serving others like Captain Myers. My heart goes out to his family and everyone in the Orangeburg community who knew him.
