I just want to take a moment to acknowledge the bravery of the 11-year-old girl who managed to escape during the horrific events that took Kristina Burroughs and her nieces. It's unfathomable to imagine what she went through, both physically and emotionally, in those terrifying moments. Her ability to alert the neighbors and get help speaks volumes about her courage under unimaginable circumstances. I hope this resilient young girl receives all the support and care she needs to heal from this traumatic experience. My heart goes out to her, along with the family and friends grieving this terrible loss in Conway. It's important that as a community, we come together to offer support and highlight the need to address domestic violence so that no one has to endure such pain in the future.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the 11-year-old girl who survived that awful night in Conway, SC. It’s hard to imagine what she went through and the courage it must have taken to escape and get help. Her bravery in the face of such horror is unimaginable, and I can’t help but feel deeply for her and the burden she carries. Children who survive such traumatic events often face long roads of recovery and healing, both physically and emotionally. I hope the community and survivor support organizations have been able to provide her with the counseling and care she needs. I also wonder how the neighbors she alerted are coping, having been pulled into such a tragedy. The Silent Witness Ceremony must have been an emotional tribute, and remembering Kristina, Justice, and Katylin — alongside raising awareness for domestic violence — is crucial. Let’s continue to have discussions about how we can support survivors and prevent these tragedies from happening in the first place. If anyone knows of ways to support victims locally or has resources to share, please do.
