I've been following the case of George Tappan Hassinger and wanted to point out something that doesn’t seem to have gotten much attention in the discussions so far. Given his vision problems due to diabetes, I'm curious about how well he could navigate his immediate environment. The rough terrain around Nevada City must be especially challenging for someone with poor eyesight. I wonder if he had any usual walking routes or places he frequented that might provide additional clues to his whereabouts. Has there been any focus on local neighbors or acquaintances who might have helped him get around or noticed his movements that day?
It's such a densely wooded and rugged area; I imagine it would be very easy for someone on foot, especially with limited vision, to become disoriented. Anyway, just hoping there might be some locals or others familiar with the area who could shed a bit more light on this particular angle. It's devastating that no trace of him has been found despite all these years.
It's been over five years since George Tappan Hassinger vanished, and one aspect that keeps nagging at me is his diabetes and poor vision. Nevada City and the surrounding areas can be pretty challenging terrain, even for someone without such health conditions. It's plausible that something as simple as losing his way or a sudden medical episode could have contributed to his disappearance. Given the combination of rough landscapes and potential wildlife encounters, I'm curious if any of the search parties used thermal imaging or drones to scan the area thoroughly—technology might find something that a human eye could miss, especially given the dense forest. Does anyone know if this approach was ever implemented during the searches? It just seems like it might help cover more ground in the tricky terrain where he went missing.
