Has anyone else been struck by how much the increase in violent crime in Indianapolis back in 2013 seemed to ripple throughout the community? Thinking specifically about Osiel Rangel Canales's case, it's just so painful to reflect on the sense of fear and uncertainty people must have felt living in the city during that time. Osiel's death wasn't just a statistic—it was a devastating loss for a family who loved him, for friends who cherished him, and for a community struggling to feel safe.
I'm curious if anybody has ideas or insights into what residents or watchdog groups were doing to try and make their neighborhoods safer back then. Were there grassroots efforts that perhaps didn’t get much attention but made a difference to some people? Truly hoping authorities and communities are better equipped these days to handle such dangerous spikes in crime and keep others from experiencing the same grief Osiel’s family went through.
