In the early summer of 1985, the tight-knit community of Metlakatla, Alaska, was forever changed by the disappearance of 28-year-old Gerald D. Lauth. On June 7th, Gerald, an American Indian/Alaska Native man, was last seen in the Annette Island Reservation community. At the time of his disappearance, he stood at 5 feet 10 inches and weighed around 175 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. His clothing was noted as a navy blue T-shirt, a Levi's jacket, jeans, and black high-top sneakers with white socks. Distinctive features included a hearing aid, a discolored front tooth, scars on his abdomen and right knee, and a tattoo on his right shoulder. The circumstances leading to Gerald's disappearance began with a domestic dispute. Following the disagreement, he left, and what happened next remains a mystery pieced together by the few clues left behind. Searchers later discovered his overturned canoe in the Chester Bay area of Annette Island, a troubling sign in the often-treacherous Alaskan waters. His campsite was also located, but there was no trace of Gerald himself. The discovery of his belongings without him present painted a grim picture for those who knew and loved him. Despite extensive air and ground searches by the Alaska State Troopers and concerned community members, Gerald was never found. The vast and rugged Alaskan wilderness, which was his home, seemed to have swallowed him whole. The investigation into his disappearance has remained open for decades, a persistent and unanswered question for his family and the community. Over the years, hope of finding him alive has faded, and he is now presumed to be deceased. The case of Gerald Lauth serves as a somber reminder of the many individuals who have vanished in Alaska's vast and unforgiving landscape, leaving behind only questions and enduring grief for those they left behind.
