Peter Strother Madison, 64, was last seen in Treasure Island, Florida, on June 13, 1986. On the evening of his disappearance, he had visited a friend's home and left in his white 1976 Ford van to return to his rented house. There is no evidence to suggest he ever made it home. Left behind at his residence were his personal belongings and his daughter's elderly, blind dog, for which he was caring. Investigators found no signs of forced entry at his home. The Treasure Island Police Department was alerted to his disappearance by a family member on June 15, 1986.
More than a month after he was last seen, Madison's van was discovered abandoned at Ninth Street and Burlington Avenue North in St. Petersburg, Florida. The vehicle had been stripped of its interior furnishings and various parts. At the time of his disappearance, Madison was retired and known to frequent bars in downtown St. Petersburg. Friends and family have stated that it was uncharacteristic of him to leave without notifying anyone, especially considering his attachment to the dog he was looking after. Since his disappearance, there has been no activity on his credit cards or bank accounts.
Madison, who was born Peter Scott Gruesbeck and changed his name in 1947, is described as a white male with graying brown hair and brown eyes, standing at 6'3" and weighing 170 pounds. He had a hernia scar and wore a full set of dentures. He also wore distinctive jewelry: a gold pinkie ring with a family crest that possibly depicted a lion and could be used as a wax seal, and a heavy, custom-made gold watch bracelet with a crisscross chain and a clasp bearing his initials, "PSM." Due to the circumstances of his disappearance, authorities suspect foul play. The Treasure Island Police Department continues to list him as a missing person and seeks any information that could lead to a resolution in his case.
