In the late 1980s, a young man named Toby Eugene Anderson, at the age of 18, disappeared from the area of Selma, Oregon. The exact date of his last contact remains uncertain, with some accounts stating August 22, 1988, while others suggest it could have been as early as the fall of 1986. At the time, Toby was navigating a difficult period in his life, characterized by family issues that led him to move between the homes of various relatives. He was a student at Illinois Valley High School, and his disappearance was shrouded in a fog of conflicting stories and rumors. Some family members were told he had run away, while others heard the tragic news that he had perished in a car accident. This lack of clear information left his loved ones in a painful state of limbo, unable to grieve or hold onto hope with any certainty. Years later, in 2018, Toby's cousin, Denise McGarity, began her own investigation into his vanishing, determined to uncover the truth. Her inquiries led her to focus on Toby's paternal uncle, Almer W. "Billy" Wright, who was the last person known to have housed Toby. When confronted, Wright presented a disturbing and inconsistent narrative. He claimed that Toby had been caught in a compromising situation with one of his daughters and, after a confrontation, was driven off the property. Wright's accounts of where he took Toby varied, at one point stating he dropped him off at a juvenile hall or police department, and at another, suggesting Toby was likely deceased and buried in California. Adding to the ominous nature of his statements, other family members recalled Wright making threats after Toby's disappearance, warning they could end up like him. It was also revealed that at the time of Toby's disappearance, Wright was involved in the drug trade and had a history of domestic violence. Shortly after Toby was last seen, Wright abruptly moved his family to Arkansas under the false pretense of caring for a sick mother. The official investigation into Toby Anderson's disappearance has been hampered by the passage of time and the scarcity of concrete evidence. Law enforcement has found no record of Toby being dropped off at any police station or juvenile facility as his uncle claimed, which would have been standard procedure. Furthermore, no evidence has surfaced to suggest Toby was alive after 1986. His cousin, Denise, has expressed her belief that he was likely murdered the night he disappeared and that his remains may be on the property where he lived with his uncle. The case remains an open and unsolved endangered missing person case, a source of enduring pain and unanswered questions for his family. Toby's father searched for him for years, passing away without ever learning the fate of his son. The conflicting stories told by the last person to see him, coupled with a history of violence and suspicious behavior, have left a dark cloud over this long-standing mystery.
