In the autumn of 1991, a 32-year-old man named Nghia Nguyen was in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, preparing for a fishing trip. On October 28, he and a fellow crewman, Kurt Langer, departed from the busy port aboard the fishing vessel Louise. They were expected to be at sea for a short time, with a planned return just five days later. At the time of his disappearance, Nghia was described as being of Asian descent, with black hair and brown eyes. He had distinct tattoos on his upper right and left arms, as well as his right forearm. He was also known to wear a gold nugget ring with the initial "N" on it. As the days passed and the scheduled return date came and went with no sign of the Louise or its two-man crew, concern grew among those who knew them. The vessel, which was their workplace and temporary home on the unpredictable waters of the Bering Sea, had vanished without a trace. The vast and often unforgiving expanse of the North Pacific had seemingly swallowed the boat whole, leaving behind no clues as to what might have transpired. The families and friends of Nghia and Kurt were left in a state of uncertainty, waiting for news that would unfortunately never arrive. In response to the overdue vessel, an extensive search of the area was launched in an attempt to locate the Louise and its crew. Despite the efforts of search and rescue teams, no sign of the fishing boat or the two men was ever found. The case of Nghia Nguyen and Kurt Langer remains a painful mystery, one of the many stories of lives lost to the formidable power of the sea. The official report from the Alaska State Troopers was filed on November 3, 1991, marking the formal beginning of a case that would remain unsolved for decades. The disappearance of the Louise and its crew serves as a somber reminder of the dangers faced by those who make their living on the water, and the profound and lasting impact on the loved ones they leave behind.
