In the unforgiving waters of the Bering Sea, the life of a fisherman is one of constant risk, a reality that the crew of the F/V St. George knew all too well. Among them was George Stewart Dahl, a 31-year-old man from Bellingham, Washington. On January 4, 1992, Dahl and his five crewmates were aboard the 94-foot crab vessel, having departed from Dutch Harbor for the crab grounds. Their last known position was in the frigid expanse near Cold Bay, Alaska. The crew, including skipper David Parkes, Terry James, Brian Schouten, Kevin Clark, and Shawn McWethy, faced the notoriously harsh conditions of the Alaskan winter at sea, a challenge that would tragically become their last. The circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the F/V St. George point to a sudden and catastrophic event. The vessel vanished approximately 152 nautical miles north of Unimak Pass. No distress call was ever received, suggesting the crew had no time to react to whatever peril befell their ship. The dangers of the Bering Sea, especially in winter, are immense, with vessels facing risks such as rogue waves, heavy icing that can lead to capsizing, and the sheer power of the arctic storms that can overwhelm even the most sturdy of boats. In the aftermath of the vessel's disappearance, extensive search efforts were launched in a desperate attempt to find any sign of the ship or its crew. Despite these numerous and thorough searches, neither the F/V St. George nor any of the crew members were ever located. The only trace of the vessel ever found was its empty life raft, discovered on January 5, 1992, a somber testament to the tragedy. The case remains a painful mystery for the families of George Dahl and his fellow crewmen, a story of six lives lost to the formidable power of the sea. The official investigation concluded that the crab-fishing vessel disappeared with the loss of its entire six-man crew, leaving behind unanswered questions and the enduring grief of those they left behind.
