In the autumn of 1996, a young man named Tony Olan Oktoyuk, aged 23, disappeared from St. Mary's, Alaska. On October 9th, he embarked on a solo hunting trip by boat, a common activity in the region. He was expected to return that same day. When he failed to come back as planned, concern grew among his family and community, and he was officially reported missing two days later to the Alaska State Troopers. At the time of his disappearance, Tony was described as an American Indian/Alaska Native male, standing six feet tall and weighing approximately 180 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He had a distinctive tattoo of "USMC" on his upper left arm. He was reportedly wearing tan Carhartt coveralls, a grey winter jacket, green raingear, and brown insulated Sorrel boots. He may have also had on burgundy or red earmuffs and a headband. Following the report of his failure to return, extensive searches of the area were initiated. The search efforts, however, yielded very little evidence of Tony or his boat. The only items ever recovered were a thermos bottle bearing his name and a gas tank, which were found floating in the Mahtkwingak Slough. This discovery sadly suggested that some form of accident had occurred on the water, but without the boat, the exact circumstances remained a mystery. The vast and often unforgiving Alaskan wilderness can pose significant challenges to search and rescue operations, and despite the efforts of those involved, no further trace of Tony Oktoyuk was ever found. His boat's whereabouts remain unknown to this day. The disappearance of Tony Oktoyuk has left a lasting impact on his loved ones and community. Without any further leads or evidence, his case grew cold over the years. He is presumed to be deceased, and his case is a somber reminder of the dangers that can be present in the Alaskan backcountry. The official investigation remains open with the Alaska State Troopers, a silent testament to a life that seemingly vanished into the remote landscape. The overview of this case is one of a young man who went on a routine hunting trip and never returned, with only a few personal belongings found to mark his last known presence in the Mahtkwingak Slough, leaving behind unanswered questions.
