On January 22, 2004, a 48-year-old man named Greg William Clark vanished into the unforgiving waters of Alaska. A longtime resident of the area and a beach logger by trade, he was making a supply run from his home on Kosciusko Island to the town of Craig. He was traveling aboard his 32-foot wooden vessel, the 'Katrina,' near Heceta Island when he radioed for help, reporting that his boat was experiencing mechanical problems and had run aground. With him on the vessel were his two Labrador retrievers, one of whom was his constant companion, Brick. Following the distress call, Clark made the decision to abandon his vessel. The United States Coast Guard was alerted and began a search of the area. They soon discovered a debris field that contained wreckage from the 'Katrina'. Among the items found was a rolled-up survival suit, though it was unclear if it belonged to Clark. A comprehensive three-day search was conducted by both the Coast Guard and local residents, but tragically, no sign of Greg Clark was found. The search for Greg Clark was officially called off, leaving his friends and the tight-knit community to fear the worst. In a surprising turn of events more than a month after the 'Katrina' sank, one of Clark's dogs, Brick, was found alive on Heceta Island. Two local fishermen discovered the dog, who was underweight and had an injured leg, several miles from where the boat went down. The remarkable survival of his dog offered a glimmer of hope, but despite this, Greg Clark was never located. The case remains a painful mystery, a story of a man and his vessel claimed by the Alaskan sea. The official circumstances of his disappearance note that he was lost after his boat struck a rock and broke up in Cone Cove.
