In the early summer of 2011, two-year-old Anthony Tullius was on a camping trip with his family at a campsite near Ellis Dam in Muskingum County, Ohio. He was with his mother, Kasey Klein, his stepfather, Richard Klein Jr., and his three-year-old brother, Ayden Cecil. The family had set up their tent near the banks of the Muskingum River. On the morning of June 4, 2011, the parents awoke to find the tent unzipped and both Anthony and Ayden gone. A search was immediately launched, and tragically, Ayden's body was discovered in the river about a mile downstream from the campsite a few hours later. Despite extensive search efforts by authorities involving cadaver dogs, divers, and rescue boats, Anthony was not found. At the time of his disappearance, Anthony was described as a White male with blond hair, standing at 2'2" and weighing 21 pounds. He was last seen wearing a red-footed sleeper with car designs on it. The investigation into the disappearance of Anthony and the death of his brother Ayden soon focused on their mother and stepfather. Authorities alleged that Kasey and Richard Klein were reckless by camping so close to the river, which was swollen from recent rains, and had not taken adequate precautions to prevent the boys from wandering off. In September 2011, both were charged with involuntary manslaughter and child endangering. The subsequent legal proceedings were complex. In early 2012, both Kasey and Richard Klein were convicted and sentenced to twelve years in prison. However, these convictions were overturned in January 2013 by a court of appeals that ruled they should have had separate trials. Following the overturned convictions, Richard Klein was acquitted in his second trial in June 2013. Later that same month, Kasey Klein pleaded guilty to two counts of child endangering and was sentenced to three years in prison; she was released after serving an additional year with credit for time served. The Muskingum County Sheriff's Office has been the primary investigating agency for this case. Despite the legal resolutions, the core tragedy of the case remains: Anthony Tullius is still missing. While his brother's death was determined to be a drowning, Anthony's fate, though presumed to be the same, has never been definitively confirmed as his remains have never been recovered. The case serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the vulnerability of children and the devastating consequences of negligence. The official investigation remains open, with law enforcement still seeking any information that could lead to locating Anthony.
