On a June day in 2013, the vast and often unforgiving waters of Alaska became the final known location for 25-year-old Allan Fenton Young. A resident of Chehalis, Washington, Young was working as a deckhand on the fishing vessel F/V Swift, which was operated by his uncle, Tim Lane. The vessel was navigating the chilly expanse of Icy Strait, approximately 30 miles west of Juneau, when a sequence of events led to Young entering the water. He was last seen near Excursion Inlet, wearing a black sweatshirt, black Grunden rain pants, and brown Xtratuf boots. Allan, who also went by the names Arthur Eugene Davis and Alan Fenton Young, was not wearing a personal flotation device at the time he went into the water. The circumstances that immediately followed Allan Young's entry into the water paint a picture of a desperate and ultimately tragic rescue attempt. The captain of the Swift, and Allan's uncle, 47-year-old Tim Lane of Sitka, quickly launched a skiff to go after his nephew. In a cruel turn of events, Lane himself ended up in the water as well. The F/V Swift was later discovered at anchor and unoccupied by the crew of another vessel, the Pacific Horizon, which then alerted the Coast Guard. While Lane was eventually rescued from a nearby beach suffering from mild hypothermia, there was no sign of Allan. The reasons why Allan initially went overboard remain unknown. An extensive search was promptly launched, involving the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies, covering more than 450 square miles of Icy Strait near Porpoise Island, an area known locally as "Home Shore". Despite these significant efforts, which included the use of the vessel "Century," underwater cameras, and the assistance of the volunteer canine unit SEADOGS, Allan Young was never located. The Coast Guard eventually made the difficult decision to suspend their active search. Friends and family remembered Allan as a man who had found his calling working in the Alaskan fishing industry, a job he had grown to love after starting it seasonally with his uncle. He was described as having a zest for life, a deep love for his family, and an appreciation for the rugged beauty of Alaska. The case remains a sorrowful mystery, a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who make their living on the sea, with Allan Young presumed to be lost to the waters he had come to embrace.
