On May 18, 2018, 70-year-old Bonnie Lena Gitto vanished while visiting family in Greenville, North Carolina. A resident of Wilmington, she was staying with her granddaughter and great-grandchildren for the week. She was last seen on foot around 2:00 p.m. in the 100 block of Fairlane Road. At the time of her disappearance, she was possibly wearing dark denim jeans, a blouse of an unknown color, and black flip-flops. She also wore prescription eyeglasses with purple and brown frames.
Just before she left, she told her grandson she would be back in five minutes but never returned.
The circumstances of Bonnie's disappearance were immediately alarming to her family. She left without her purse, phone, car, identification, money, and credit cards. Crucially, she did not take her necessary medication for bipolar disorder, a condition she suffers from. Her appearance was also uncharacteristic; she was not wearing makeup and her hair was not styled, which was unusual for her. Given her medical condition and the fact that she was unfamiliar with the Greenville area, her case was classified as an endangered missing person.
In the years since she was last seen, there have been no sightings of Bonnie, and no one has reported having contact with her.
