In the autumn of 2019, 64-year-old Michael Dean Vos, a man known for his self-sufficiency and deep familiarity with the wilderness, vanished from the North Bend, Oregon area. He was last seen by friends on October 10, 2019. Standing at 5'11" and weighing around 150 pounds, Vos had a history of living in various states but had strong connections to Coos County and was particularly familiar with the South Powers and Elk River regions. His family noted that he was skilled in primitive survival and had expressed a desire to live off the land. Concerns for his well-being grew, and on October 16, 2019, relatives reported him overdue, prompting the Coos County Sheriff's Office to begin an investigation into his disappearance. The search for Michael Vos took a significant turn on October 29, 2019, when his car was discovered abandoned in a remote area of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, approximately 9.5 miles south of the small community of Powers. This discovery intensified the search efforts, but there was no sign of Vos near his vehicle. Investigators and search teams began to piece together a concerning timeline. It was believed that due to his mental state, which may have included the onset of dementia, he may not have wanted to be found. Further searching of the rugged terrain led to the discovery of some of his clothing northeast of where his car was located, suggesting he had removed them after parking and walked into the forest. The Coos County Sheriff's Office, along with volunteers from Coos County Search and Rescue, conducted extensive searches in the vast wilderness where his car was found. The search was expanded with the assistance of CORSAR, a consortium of search and rescue teams from Southern Oregon and Northern California. Despite the intensive grid searches and the efforts of multiple agencies, active search operations were eventually curtailed on November 2, 2019. Authorities transitioned to wider-ranging patrols and have asked the public, especially those who travel in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, to remain vigilant for any signs of Mr. Vos. His case remains an active missing person investigation, a deeply concerning situation for a man described as a skilled survivalist who seemingly vanished into the wilderness he knew so well.
