In the vast and often unforgiving landscape of Alaska, a journey that was familiar to 69-year-old Albert Adam Kvamme Jr. became his last. On the morning of April 10, 2020, Kvamme, a Yupik man, departed from the small city of Akiak, located in the Bethel Census Area. He was traveling to Togiak, a trip he had made frequently to visit family, on a black, green, and yellow snow machine, pulling a plastic sled behind him. The journey across the mountains typically took between ten and twenty hours, depending on the conditions. Kvamme was last seen at approximately 10:00 a.m., dressed in brown or black down outer gear for the trek ahead. Standing at 5'6" and weighing 170 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes, he was a familiar face in the region. When Albert Kvamme Jr. did not arrive in Togiak the following day, concern for his welfare grew, and local search and rescue teams from both Togiak and Akiak were mobilized to begin the search for the missing man. The search efforts soon expanded, with volunteers from Akiachak Search and Rescue and Bethel Search and Rescue joining the mission. The unforgiving Alaskan wilderness, however, presented significant challenges. Alaska State Troopers and the Rescue Coordination Center conducted multiple aerial surveys, flying out of Bethel and Dillingham, but found no trace of Kvamme or his snow machine. Searchers reported that they could not find any snowmachine tracks in the mountains between the two communities, leading them to believe that he may not have traveled far from his starting point in Akiak. The intensive search for Albert Kvamme Jr. continued for several days. However, by April 14, the ground search had to be called off by local volunteers due to deteriorating and unsafe conditions, including melting snow and open water. Two days later, on April 16, the Alaska State Troopers also made the difficult decision to suspend their aerial search efforts, pending any new information or leads. Despite the extensive search by ground and air, no evidence of Kvamme or his snow machine was ever located. The case remains a painful mystery for his loved ones and the close-knit communities of the region. Authorities have encouraged anyone with information regarding the disappearance of Albert Kvamme to contact the Alaska State Troopers. An overview of the case details that he embarked on a familiar journey but vanished without a trace, and despite subsequent searches, his whereabouts remain unknown.
