Their planned flight to Kodiak was for a seabird survey, a routine trip in the vast Alaskan wilderness. However, the aircraft, carrying Johnson, Jay Haddock, Robert Bergman, and Leonard Boughton, never reached its destination. The plane was reported overdue, marking the beginning of a mystery that has endured for decades. The flight was last heard from while over the north Pacific Ocean. Following the report of the overdue aircraft, an extensive search and rescue operation was launched.
