Janet Callies, a 40-year-old mother of three, disappeared on the night of November 15, 1978, from Grand Island, Nebraska. She was last seen at a local bar called the Sundowner, located near Interstate 80. That evening, Janet called her daughter around 7:30 p.m. to arrange dinner plans. She was supposed to pick her daughter up from her apartment at 8:30 p.m. but never arrived. Janet has not been seen or heard from since.
Her red and beige 1975 Dodge Dart, with Nebraska license plate number 8C4696, also vanished and has never been recovered.
Janet was officially reported missing six days later by her ex-husband on November 21, 1978. Investigators initially had no strong leads, and her case remained unsolved. In 1984, notorious serial killers Henry Lee Lucas and Ottis Toole confessed to her murder. Lucas claimed they had abducted Janet, with Toole strangling her, and then buried her body somewhere between Grand Island and the South Dakota border. He also mentioned selling her car in Canada. However, no physical evidence was found to substantiate their confessions, and the confessions were later considered unreliable, as Lucas was found to have fabricated many of his claims.
Despite extensive searches and the involvement of law enforcement, Janet Callies' body was never located, and no definitive conclusions about her fate were reached.
