On a brisk autumn day, November 21, 2001, 18-year-old Eugene Harold Hyatt and his 16-year-old girlfriend, Kami Luella Vollendroff, disappeared from the scenic but rugged coastline of Newport, Oregon. The young couple from Stayton, Oregon, were visiting with Eugene's grandparents and staying in their oceanfront condominium. At approximately 10:00 a.m., they informed his grandparents of their plans to explore the tide pools at Boiler Bay State Park in nearby Depoe Bay and then left the condominium. This was the last time anyone would report seeing or hearing from either Eugene or Kami. Eugene, also known as Gene, was a Caucasian male with brown hair and blue eyes, standing between 5'6" and 5'8" tall and weighing around 140 to 150 pounds. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a white Stayton Eagles sweatshirt and sneakers. The prevailing theory held by law enforcement is that the couple was tragically swept out to sea. A powerful storm had struck the coastal area around the time of their disappearance, and it is believed that a strong wave likely pulled them into the turbulent ocean waters. This hypothesis was bolstered by a discovery made several days after they vanished. One of Eugene's tennis shoes was found near Boiler Bay Cove, a rocky inlet located less than a mile from where they were last seen within the park. Despite this piece of evidence, extensive searches yielded no further signs of the couple, and their bodies have never been recovered. The disappearance of Eugene Hyatt and Kami Vollendroff remains an unresolved and heartbreaking case. The absence of their remains has left their families with lingering questions and a profound sense of loss. While the official explanation points to a tragic accident at sea, the lack of definitive proof has allowed for other theories to be considered by some, including the possibility of foul play. The investigation, led by the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, remains open. The case serves as a somber reminder of the unforgiving power of the ocean and the enduring pain experienced by those left behind when loved ones vanish without a trace.
